Assumption of Mary, Coronation of Mary – An Introduction, May 22

In the final two Glorious Mysteries, we celebrate Mary’s life, gift and sacrifice, in the mysteries of The Assumption of Mary into Heaven and Mary Crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth.

The Assumption, refers to Mary taken body and soul into heavenly glory right at the end of her earthly life. Marys assumption flows from her unique role in Christ’s victory as the mother of the Saviour and the first and most faithful of followers. She hears the word of God and keeps it.
We understand the scripture from Revelation 12, to portray Mary as queen of heaven, where it reads, “A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.” (Rev. 12:1)
Mary in this new role serves Christ’s kingdom by lovingly presenting our needs and intercessions before him, leading souls closer to him. St. Pope John Paul II puts it best:
“Thus far from creating distance between her and us, Mary’s glorious state as queen brings about a continuous and caring closeness. She knows everything that happens in our lives and supports us with maternal love in our trials. Taken up to heavenly glory, Mary dedicates herself totally to the work of salvation. She wants every living person to know the happiness granted her. She is a queen who gives all that she possesses, participating above all in the life and love of Christ.”
We each have our own image and impressions of Mary. We too, have our own ways in which we relate to and honour her. Mary is known by many names: Theotokos [Godbearer]; mother; queen; the first disciple; confidant; consoler; an intercessor par excellence. Take a few moments now to search your heart and bring Mary to the forefront of your mind. Notice the image that you hold. Now take time to bring to mind the concerns of your heart. Worry, fear, loneliness, grief, health etc. Let Mary know these concerns and ask her to intercede for you and bring these requests to her beloved Son.
Let us give thanks for the loving intercession of Mary our queen mother. May we confidently turn to Mary with our needs, knowing that she presents our petitions before her son trusting that Jesus responds to her.
