ECUMENICAL BIBLE WEEK MAY 2015

PENTECOST PROJECT SCHOOLS COMPETITION
The Pentecost Project Schools Competition is an exciting new project being offered to
schools as part of Ecumenical Bible Week. This concept will utilise digital media and bridge the
link between the local parish communities and the schools and ideally the home/parents.
This competition follows on from last years concept of 4th class students focusing on the
Pentecost narrative in Acts 2 and producing a comic strip with the advantage of connecting
potentially with every primary school throughout both dioceses Catholic and Church of Ireland.
Children's author and illustrator Alan Nolan will be part of the project but this time producing four
video workshops that Scripture Union will direct. Alan will work in partnership with Scripture Union to
produce a template of the comic book process along with five lessons. This again will be digital and
can be downloaded by the teachers/schools. The project this will be an individual one for each
student but done both in the class and at home.
We will need the services of the Diocesan education advisers in the diocese and the Cof I
Education Board to promote and encourage involvement in the project.
The website will have all the details needed for teacher and schools who wish to involve their fourth class students.
There will need to be a key teacher and also a parish contact who will lead/champion the project
locally and in their classroom.
This would be a great opportunity to engage with the Parish Pastoral
Workers/ Parish Councils and their links with their local schools.
The schools can opt to participate or not and this application can be sent online to the EBW
committee.
- The Parish will need to liaise with their local school if they are participating to then ensure
they host an exhibition. The local parish will have the responsibility of choosing the winner based on
the criteria that Scripture Union and the EBW produce. All details of this will be online and sent to the
Parishes.
The project them becomes grounded in the parish, the schools and the homes and there will be a
local exhibition of the comics, a local adjudication team and awards around the week of EBW.
The winning students and school will then be named in the EBW programme leaflet for the week.
The timeline for this project will be left to the teacher. The website will be ready the last week before
Easter March 23rd and there will be five lessons in total. The comic strips will need to be collected
from the Local parish the week before Ecumenical Bible Week which begins from May 24th.
I hope you sense our excitement about this and the potential for these schools, parishes and EBW.
I should also add that we also plan to run with what we are calling the Pentecost Experience in 7
schools in the Sean Mc Dermott Street and East Wall area working with Pauline O’ Shea the Parish
Pastoral Worker, Alan Nolan Graphic Illustrator and Grace Deegan Scripture Union.
Many thanks
